Our Mission
An industry in crisis.
Glacier Media, Black Press, and Post Media are struggling to keep community newsrooms open. Amidst declining advertising revenue and the introduction of the federal government’s controversial Bill C-18, which hinders social media companies from showing Canadian news content to Canadians, the future of the industry is uncertain.
Newsroom Closures
Since 2008, over 529 newsrooms have shuttered across the country with 76 per cent being community papers.
Declining Ad Revenue
Meta, Google, and Amazon control 89 per cent of the $16.6 billion online advertising revenue. Of the $16.6 billion, only six per cent ends up in the hands of Canadian media companies.*
Disappearing Revenue
In 2008, the newspaper industry in Canada peaked with a collective revenue of $4.7 billion. By 2023, revenue had fallen to under $1.7 billion.*

Why support us?
We take a different approach to funding our newsroom. The Foundation for Local Journalism has been incorporated as a non-profit society, so we can put our reporters and the content we create above profit. Our alternative financial backing doesn’t involve corporate shareholders, but relies on support from readers like yourself. Your donations can and do make a difference with every dollar contributed, allowing our reporters to be paid fairly for the important journalism being done, covering community stories that matter to you.

Our
Mission
is
Simple
To provide financial support to journalists
What that means is:
Building collaborative platforms that ensure fair pay and dignified work for our journalists who conduct meaningful reporting that prioritizes truth and quality news over algorithmic demands.
