PORT MOODY, B.C. — Port Moody police said they have seized more than 700 pieces of suspected stolen mail and other property during a pair of search warrants carried out late last month.

The seizures follow what investigators describe as a series of mail thefts and storage locker break-ins at Suter Brook Village in Port Moody over the summer. Police said officers identified several suspects connected to the thefts, which led them to two residences in Surrey.

On Aug. 28, officers executed simultaneous search warrants at those homes. Three people were taken into custody, two of whom were already wanted on outstanding arrest warrants unrelated to the mail theft investigation.

Police say about 730 parcels, packages and other pieces of mail destined for Port Moody and nearby communities were recovered. Officers also seized building fobs, keys, security passes, jewelry and even a firefighter’s badge.

“We have seen an uptick in mail theft and storage locker break-ins in Port Moody this year,” Const. Sam Zacharias said in a statement.

He urged residents to collect their mail frequently and take extra steps to secure storage lockers. Zacharias also recommended that strata councils perform regular audits of electronic fobs, noting stolen fobs are increasingly being used to gain unlawful access to apartment and condo buildings.

Investigators say the seized evidence is still being examined. Charges are being considered against all three suspects, though none have yet been laid.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and further details will be released as the case progresses.
