A dog is back home after the vehicle it was riding in was stolen Tuesday morning in Port Moody.

Police say the incident happened shortly after 8 a.m. on Oct. 7, when a motorist briefly stepped out of his blue Hyundai Santa Fe SUV, which had been parked in the 2600 block of St. Johns Street.

An unknown man wearing a white hoodie got into the vehicle and drove off westbound, with the owner’s dog still inside.

With help from the owner, police were able to track the SUV to south Coquitlam, where officers found it parked and unoccupied. Police believe the dog was abandoned in the same area as a passerby spotted the animal on a busy road and brought it to a local animal hospital.

Police say the dog was unharmed and has since been reunited with its family.

“The vehicle has been seized for forensic examination as we work to identify the suspect,” Const. Sam Zacharias of the Port Moody Police Department said in a statement. “We have also conducted video canvasses and are looking to speak with any witnesses or anyone who has relevant dash camera footage.”

No arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to contact Port Moody police.
